Uniform Division

Dedicated to the safety and service of all citizens and visitors to Michigan City, the officers and civilian staff of the Michigan City Police Department Uniform Division are lead by Chief of Operations. The Uniform Division is the “back bone” of the Department and the largest Division within the MCPD, often serving as the public’s first point of contact.

Patrol Division

The Uniformed Patrol Division is the most visible part of the Department, operating 24/7 and handling the majority of police services. Officers patrol assigned areas by vehicle or on foot, focusing on law enforcement, crime prevention, emergency response, public assistance, and community safety.

The Uniformed Patrol Division consists of Shift 1, Shift 2, Shift 3 and Traffic Unit. All three shifts operate during the following hours:

  • Patrol Shift 1  –  6:30 AM – 2:30 PM
  • Patrol Shift 2  –  2:30 PM – 10:30 PM
  • Patrol Shift 3  –  10:30 PM – 6:30 AM
  • Law Enforcement & Patrol – Preventative patrol and active enforcement of the law.

  • Community Assistance – Support for civilians and businesses.

  • Emergency Response – Immediate assistance in urgent situations.

  • Public Information – Providing relevant updates and resources to the community.

Traffic Division

The Traffic Division concentrates its efforts on enforcement in high traffic areas, in areas where traffic complaints are received, and in identified locations where collisions are likely to occur. They accomplish this by speed enforcement, videotaping intersections, patrolling for aggressive drivers, and other various enforcement initiatives. A primary goal for the Traffic Division is the efficient and effective movement of traffic on our roadways.

  • Traffic Enforcement & Safety – Speed enforcement, DUI and seatbelt checkpoints, and intersection surveillance.

  • Patrol & Response – Routine patrols and specialized motorcycle patrols.

  • Traffic Management – Traffic control and logistics for community events.

  • Accident Investigations – Investigation and reconstruction of severe injury or fatal accidents.

SWAT Team

MCPD’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team is an elite group of officers from various units and divisions within the department who volunteer to serve as SWAT team members.

Specially trained to perform high-risk operations, team members are required to be on-call at all times

  • High-Risk Warrant Execution – Carry out search and arrest warrants for violent and dangerous suspects.

  • Tactical Support – Assist the La Porte County Drug Task Force with suspect apprehensions.

  • Critical Incident Response – Handle barricaded suspects, hostage rescues, and heavily armed threats.

  • Operations & Sweeps – Conduct large-scale warrant sweeps.

Michigan City Police Swat

SCUBA Team

Serving as the elite unit for public safety and rescue on the city’s waters, MCPD’s SCUBA Team responds to boat accidents, accidental drownings, flood emergencies, swift water rescues, and many other water-related crises.

Responsibilities also include conducting underwater crime scene investigations and evidence recovery.

  • Water Rescue & Safety – Responds to boat accidents, accidental drownings, and swift water rescues.

  • Emergency Response – Assists in flood emergencies and other water-related crises.

  • Underwater Investigations – Conducts crime scene investigations and evidence recovery.

  • Public Safety Support – Enhances city-wide emergency preparedness for water incidents.

Honor Guard

Honor Guard is a ceremonial unit with MCPD comprised of sworn officers who formally represent our department at funerals and public events.

Responsibilities include serving as pallbearers, rifle bearers, and presenting national, State, and ISP colors. The team also participates in conferences, parades, police memorials, and honor guard competitions.

  • Ceremonial Representation – Represents MCPD at funerals and public events.

  • Formal Duties – Serves as pallbearers, rifle bearers, and presents national, state, and ISP colors.

  • Community Engagement – Participates in conferences, parades, and police memorials.

  • Honor Guard Competitions – Competes in specialized law enforcement ceremonial events.

Police K9

K9 Unit

MCPD currently utilizes 4 K-9 teams. All dogs are trained in narcotic detection, tracking, evidence location, handler protection, and suspect apprehension.

​Each K-9 team participates in numerous weeks of training throughout the year and is certified by the North American Police Work Dog Association.

​Our K-9s are sworn members of the police department and live with their officer and their family.

  • Specialized Training – K-9s are trained in narcotic detection, tracking, evidence recovery, and suspect apprehension.

  • Handler Protection – K-9s assist officers with safety and defense during operations.

  • Ongoing Certification – Teams undergo extensive training and are certified by the North American Police Work Dog Association.

  • Dedicated Partners – K-9s are sworn members of the department and live with their assigned officer.
