File a Police Report

Welcome to the Michigan City Police Department’s Online Police Report Form. The purpose of this form is to allow citizens to conveniently file police reports from home, work, or anywhere with Internet access.

This website should never be used to report an emergency, a crime in progress, or any type of injury. For emergencies, call 9-1-1. For any other situation that requires an officer’s response, call (219) 874-3221 x 1001.

Incidents That Cannot Be Reported Online

If you answered “Yes” to any of the statements below, you CANNOT file your report online; you must call the Front Desk (219) 874-3221 to have an officer take your report.

  • This is an Emergency. (Please call 911)

  • This is a Motor Vehicle Accident.

  • This incident occurred OUTSIDE the City of Michigan City’s City limits.

  • You are reporting a theft offense, and the value of the stolen property is more than $750.

  • You are reporting a theft offense, and the stolen property is a firearm (gun), license plates, a stolen motor vehicle, or hazardous material.

  • You are reporting Property Destruction, and the damage is valued at more than $750.

  • There is evidence to indicate that this is a hate crime or bias related.

  • There is any physical evidence connected to the crime that needs to be collected (i.e. blood, obvious fingerprints).

  • You do not have a valid email address.

  • You are not the actual victim of the incidents listed above.

  • Any injuries have occurred as a result of this crime.

Incidents You Can Report Online

Fraud

Definition: Wrongful or criminal deception intended to result in financial or personal gain.

Example: Billing for services not provided, billing for work already completed, investment schemes.

Phone Harassment

Definition: Unwanted phone calls of an annoying, harassing or threatening nature. Repeated Hang-ups

Example: Immediate hang-ups, obscene language, etc. with no known suspects.

Identity Theft

Definition: Obtaining someone else’s personal identifying information and using it to obtain credit, goods or services. Stealing your identity

Example: Someone obtains a credit card using your S.S.N. or obtains phone service using your personal information.

Lost Propety

Definition: When property is missing or lost.

Example: Property that is missing, leaving items in restaurant, or missing from home.

Property Damage (Accidental)

Definition: Minor property damage which is not criminal in nature under $750 loss. (Does not include vehicle crashes)

Example: Damage of personal property without criminal intent.

Theft (Non-Vehicle)

Definition: Your property is taken or attempted to be taken without your permission. (Other than forced entry into property & less than $750.00)

Example: Property known to be stolen, or attempted to be stolen may be reported. Stolen bicycles, lawn furniture, tools, etc.

Vandalism

Definition: The intentional act of changing, modifying or defacing public or private property. (Less than $750.00)

Example: Graffiti, knocking over mail box, throwing rock through windows, etc.

Violation of a Protective Order (Not in progress)

Definition: A protective order is a civil suit not connected to any other type of case. Violation of a protective order is a crime. In Indiana, violating a protective order is listed as the crime of Invasion of Privacy, but it can also be part of other crimes such as stalking. 

Example: The Respondent is prohibited from harassing, annoying, telephoning, contacting, or directly or indirectly communicating with the Petitioner.

What Happens After You File a Report

1. Report Reviewed by MCPD Staff

All online police reports are first reviewed by Michigan City Police Department personnel before they are officially accepted.

2. Case Number & Report Copy

Once your report is approved and a valid email address has been provided, you’ll receive your permanent case number and a PDF copy of the report by email, typically within five business days.

3. Follow-Up If Needed

If, after review, further investigation is required or more information is needed, an officer or investigator may contact you.
